dear sweet wintertime

the merry twinkle of your laughter delights me,

and i smile back, bright red cheeks and all.

i remember so clearly,

our snowball fights on winter afternoons,

followed by cocoa and grandma's hugs.

our snowmen with button eyes and carrot noses,

straight out of a picture book.

then a gust of wind breaks my thoughts,

and we catch snowflakes on our tongues. 

it's just like the old times, i think aloud,

and you nod in agreement.

now so much time has passed,

but the memories are still crystal clear,

as clear as the icicles

that hang from the roof.

my dear, you say, and i look up.

you reach for my mitten-clad hand, and we dissolve into laughter.

we are children once again.
